POWERING COMMUNITIES TO INSPIRE THEIR CHILDREN WITH Creativity

We believe in the power of creativity and people to engage children, innovate business and connect communities.

We're a charitable initiative that gives school communities the Inspiration and Resources to run STEAM Co. Days.

These 'school days like no other' are days of creative thinking and doing activities across the crucial STEAM* skills. They connect communities with schools and children with the curriculum and career/life pathways.

Why not help run a STEAM Co. Day in a school?

Or book a half day 'Rocket Kids' sampler session or run a community screening/briefing?

Or sign up to support or sponsor us?

Yep, it's YOUR turn.

STOP

Before we start on the why, what, how of it all, take a look at this short film of a STEAM Co. Day that was commissioned by the tri-borough council of Westminster, Kensington and Hammersmith to support a key note speech we were asked to give at their school leaders conference at the end of 2016. (We've come a long way since no one would let us speak at their conference so we booked the Royal Institution and ran our own)

In the film below, you'll hear a head teacher describe how their STEAM Co. Day brought their community together, see a teacher have a refreshingly inspiring day in school, how a professional mum brought her skills in, the 'magic' activity run by a local bank and how a 'no kids yet' innovation consultant had one of the best days of his career.

But most importantly see why this little boy is literally jumping for joy on his STEAM Co. Day.

“We know that when you have fun, you learn. Memories last. It lingers.

A creative approach to the curriculum provides an opportunity for children to experience learning”

Shelley Duffy - Principal Lead Adviser
Westminster, Kensington and Hammersmith
Tri-borough Education Service

“I was lucky enough to be at Kenmont Primary.  I saw the assembly. I’ve been in many schools but rarely have I seen a whole school so enthused, engaged and excited.

It was absolutely brilliant”

Margaret Brown - EAL Adviser
Westminster, Kensington and Hammersmith
Tri-borough Education Service

Creativity and community

Now watch this film of how a digital agency in London's Shoreditch 'Tech City' freed up some staff for a day and worked with secondary children, a world famous creative and one of the country's most challenged school communities to give their children a STEAM Co. Day.

Why?

As well as a solid academic background, our children need to be able to problem solve, think creatively and work together to thrive in the impending fourth industrial revolution.

And it's critical we "get them in Primary" to connect them with the curriculum and sow seeds for career pathways.

But primary schools are already flat out teaching children reading, writing and maths and the the pressure only gets more intense in secondary.

How?

We believe the talent to inspire children with creativity is latent in every community, so we're connecting parents, carers, creatives and businesses with schools across the UK. There's something everyone can do to help on a STEAM Co. Day in a Primary or a 'collapsed timetable day' in Secondary.

We inspire and provide resources to help communities run STEAM Co. Days.

  • INSPIRATION: Our regional launch events and community briefings and screenings set out to showcase creativity, spread the word and connect communities to run STEAM Co. Days. See our Ironbridge event film here.
  • RESOURCES:  Whether you already have nearly everything you need to run a STEAM Co. Day, want to borrow our Pop-Up Day Drop Truck or use our Inspirator activities, we can help you.

We've had help to date from some of the UK's biggest companies and hope to persuade more of them as sponsors and the UK's world class creative talent to help us as #inspirators.

Click here to sign up below so we can keep you posted and help you run one in your school.

First you could book one of our half day 'Rocket Kids' Samplers.

STEAM Co. Days?

STEAM Co. Days are an adrenaline shot of creativity, a day of 20 or so thinking and doing activities across the spectrum of STEAM* skills. See film on the right and others here >

The effect is felt through the year and beyond, as we hope to help children find out what they want to be great at, and help them pursue that dream.

We're now looking for like-minded parents and other carers, schools, creatives and local businesses as well as funding support to help us roll it out across the UK.

Talking like TED. Walking with Ted.

We had a fantastic time in Norwich recently as lead partners of TEdxNorwichED where a couple of our board of advisers and other friends were speaking.

See the film below that STEAM Co. Co-founder made there with creativity guru Tom Morley and read the blog it inspired for us all to walk the talk, to walk with Ted.

Collaboration is the magic ingredient.

STEAM Co. is special because it brings creative talent from the community into schools to complement the work and skills of teachers, with a healthy dose of help from parents.

Collaboration is the magic ingredient.

STEAM Co. is special because it brings creative talent from the community into schools to complement the work and skills of teachers, with a healthy dose of help from parents.

STEAM stands for the STEAM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Maths.

The word ART should be double sized and in technicolour as it's more than just a fifth of the equation, but critical to engaging children and delivering true innovation thinking and doing - key to tomorrow's economy and employment.

Be quite clear though, it's not just another arts and crafts day, but about inspiring creativity in all its forms.

If the Co. in STEAM Co. stood for one thing, it might very well be Collaboration, the ingredient that makes it all possible.

A unique and inclusive collaboration of creatives, parents, teachers and the community:

Creatives

We bring in creatives (people and companies) from across the arts, sciences and technology.

Here inventor Darcy Turner shows a game made with his Stixx from newspapers.

Teachers

There's never been a tougher time to be a teacher with so many pressures and subjects.

A STEAM Co. day compliments their skills and provides inspiration for activities into the year.

Photo 28-09-2012 11 43 36 AM.jpg

Parents

There's something every parent and carer can do before or on a STEAM Co. day.

It might be cutting and pasting props at home before, or helping run activities on, the day.

Community

We get great support from local companies, whether financial or people.

Barclays, Lego, Google, National Grid and BT have supported us in the past.

Yes, STEAM Co. is all about collaboration. We want to see carers, parents, teachers and student form secondary and further education working with primary schools as well as artists and local businesses, museums, galleries and other institutions.

Look what the Times Education Supplement thought of our community collaboration.

What better way to get word out than to go on the road to not only tell people about STEAM Co. but to showcase creativity, education and community in their areas.

And to give them the inspiration and resources to go away and run their own STEAM Co. Days.

POP UP DAYS AT HAY

If you know the story behind the 'Rocket Kids' STEAM Co. Sampler session, you'll know how a book that a grandad found in the Oxfam bookshop he volunteers in, inspired his son to inspire his sons and other people's children.

You'll also appreciate how special it was for us to collaborate with the community and county that hosts the UK's if not one of the world's most famous literary and arts festivals, the Hay Festival.

2 MINS ON THE IMPACT OF #EBACC

Without wanting to get too political about it, along with many other parents, creatives, educators and business people we're concerned about the impact that the EBacc is having on creativity in UK schools and beyond.

This 2 minute talk by Bill Watkin (ex SSAT/SFCA) at the evening of talks that Barclays hosted for us recently, sums it up perfectly. Do share it.
