“We know that when you have fun, you learn. Memories last.

A creative approach to the curriculum provides an opportunity for children to experience learning”

“I was lucky enough to be at Kenmont Primary.

I’ve been in many schools but I've rarely seen a whole school so enthused, engaged and excited. It was absolutely brilliant”

ART : ROCKETS : DADS : READING - It’s the #ART of ROCKET DADS WEEK

We don’t do rocket science here at STEAM Co - we call it the art of rockets because of the way they have connected us with school communities across the UK, indeed the world, as we launched in Brazil last week.

When we heard the rumours that Sir Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’ had been chosen as the John Lewis Christmas ad we got very excited.

And then found that it hadn’t. And that we’d been given a greater gift. And we’re giving back.

We’re writing a series of short stories for dads, and mums, to read to their kids? Read more >

ART? WHAT’S THAT?

Quite simply, “Art is what we call it when what we do might connect us”

It might be Drawing, Dancing or DJing, Cooking, or Coding, Science or Skateboarding, Fashion or Football.

We have to help Connect our Kids with their Art, something they can be passionate about. Work at. Excel in. And we have to get them in primary.

And we must Connect our Communities with their Schools. Our kids need us.

That’s what we do on our school visits and STEAM Co. Days

We don’t care about acronyms, STEM or STEAM. It’s about Creativity.

In schools that’s Teaching Creativity - teaching creative subjects like the Arts, Tech or Design as much as English - and Teaching Creatively - using engaging approaches, where appropriate, like project based learning, embedding career aspirations and community engagement.

The short film below says it all. Why we're here. What we do. Who we do it with and how you can get involved, because we know 'It takes a whole village to inspire a child' - not just teachers and parents but other creative carers in school communities like artists, techs, employers, older students, retirees, etc.

WATCH THIS

Before we start on the why, what, how of it all, take a look at this short film below of a STEAM Co. Day that was commissioned by the tri-borough council of Westminster, Kensington and Hammersmith to support a keynote speech our co-founder was asked to give at their school leaders conference.

In the film above, you'll hear a head teacher describe how their STEAM Co. Day brought their community together.

You'll see a teacher have a refreshingly inspiring day in school.

Watch how how a professional mum brought her skills in, the 'magic' activity run by a local bank.

And why that little boy is literally jumping for joy on his STEAM Co. Day.

CAMPAIGNING FOR CREATIVITY

We don’t see how anyone can believe in something and not want to stand up for it when they need to.

Creativity is critical to the UK, in schools, work and lives yest is under pressure, at risk even, due to some aspects of our education policy and lack of awareness among some parents and teachers.

ART FOR ALL

#ILOVEART

We were delighted to be able to team up with $1m TED Talks prize winner and world famous street artist JR on our #ILOVEART campaign, which has seen hundreds of posters printed.

Collaboration is the magic ingredient.

STEAM Co. is special because it brings creative talent from the community into schools to complement the work and skills of teachers, with a healthy dose of help from parents.

Collaboration is the magic ingredient.

STEAM Co. is special because it brings creative talent from the community into schools to complement the work and skills of teachers, with a healthy dose of help from parents.

STEAM stands for the STEAM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Maths.

The word ART should be double sized and in technicolour as it's more than just a fifth of the equation, but critical to engaging children and delivering true innovation thinking and doing - key to tomorrow's economy and employment.

Be quite clear though, it's not just another arts and crafts day, but about inspiring creativity in all its forms.

If the Co. in STEAM Co. stood for one thing, it might very well be Collaboration, the ingredient that makes it all possible.

A unique and inclusive collaboration of creatives, parents, teachers and the community:

LHFT191.jpg

Creatives

We bring in creatives (people and companies) from across the arts, sciences and technology.

Here inventor Darcy Turner shows a game made with his Stixx from newspapers.

Teachers

There's never been a tougher time to be a teacher with so many pressures and subjects.

A STEAM Co. day compliments their skills and provides inspiration for activities into the year.

Photo 28-09-2012 11 43 36 AM.jpg

Parents

There's something every parent and carer can do before or on a STEAM Co. day.

It might be cutting and pasting props at home before, or helping run activities on, the day.

106 (Small).jpg

Community

We get great support from local companies, whether financial or people.

Barclays, Lego, Google, National Grid and BT have supported us in the past.

Yes, STEAM Co. is all about collaboration. We want to see carers, parents, teachers and student form secondary and further education working with primary schools as well as artists and local businesses, museums, galleries and other institutions.

Look what the Times Education Supplement thought of our community collaboration.
